"All cultures create ‘masks’ – names and images for God"

Masks of Eternity – by Jim Pym

In 1988, Joseph Campbell, the distinguished scholar of ‘myth’, gave six hour-long recorded conversations with veteran journalist, Bill Moyers, entitled ‘The Power of the Myth’.   In 2016, the second of these, The Message of the Myth, was shown, stimulating much discussion. This time, the sixth one, Masks of Eternity, will be shown. “All cultures create ‘masks’ – names and mages for God – to serve as metaphors for inexpressible transcendence, the being beyond all being and the idea beyond all thought.”  Jim will conduct the discussion that will follow the video.  Myth is a language that speaks directly to the heart, and is an interesting reflection of mysticism.

Jim Pym has had a life-long interest in comparative religion, particularly Buddhism and Quakerism, and particularly from a mystical point of view, which leads naturally into his interest in, and vocation for, spiritual healing.

This, the first of three sessions on the theme of ‘Exploring Spirituality’ is intended to be of interest not only to Quakers, but also other spiritual seekers.   All are welcome.  Admission is free, but donations towards the QMH expenses will be gratefully accepted.   Each session will probably comprise a talk, questions and answers, sharing experiences and discussion, and a time of meditation or silent worship.    They will take place monthly on a Saturday afternoon, from 2.30–4.30 pm.   Tea/coffee will be available for a modest charge from 2.00 - 2.30 pm.
