Children’s Worker – West Coast Friends Gather

We are looking for someone with energy and a passion for children work. The role involves supporting residential weekend gathering of Quakers from remote and rural communities in Scotland.

We want to support children and young people attending our event to participate fully and create a truly all-age community.

The Children’s Worker will have experience of working with children and young people, particularly primary aged children. They will be excited to support the development of a programme that includes children and young people and covers complex topics. They will be willing to be part of the community that is formed over the weekend, participating themselves where they can.

Salary:                   £170 total (plus pre-agreed travel expenses, food and board during the event)

Hours:                   At event:  8 hour total over 3 days, Friday 13 – Sunday 15 March.
                             In preparation: 2.5 hours.
                             Follow up/reflection: 1.5 hour

Contract:               Fixed Term - freelance basis, self-employed

Background information

A weekend all-age day visitor and residential gathering for remote and rural Quakers, across Scotland with particular focus on the West of Scotland.

We anticipate more than 30 people, with a small number of primary aged children.

Children's Worker role description

Aims of the role:

  1. To provide the children and adults attending West Coast Friends Gather with support to be as fully and equally engaged as possible.
  2. To work as part of the planning team to plan both inclusive sessions for all ages and any necessary separate sessions for children and young people. These will be linked to the theme of the weekend; “Let Your Lives Speak” and will be grounded in Quaker testimonies and process.
  3. To support the event itself, as both a part of the planning team and youth worker running sessions, this might mean adapting the programme reflexively to the needs of the attendees.

 

Job Description:

Before the event (2.5 hours):

  • To join the planning team to prepare for the event.
  • To advise on integrated sessions that include children and adults and suggest all-age activities.
  • To plan separate activities and sessions for CYP where needed.
  • To gather supplies for any activities you planned.

 

During the event (8 hours):

  • To provide support during the event, leading children’s activities and supporting all age activities during the session times.
  • To ensure excellent safeguarding and health & safety practice.
  • To set up any dedicated spaces for children.
  • To highlight immediately to the contact person any issues relating to safeguarding or health and safety.
  • To clear away materials, and leave any dedicated space for children and young people as found.

 

After the event (1 hours):

  • To gather your own thoughts about the event prior to the debrief.
  • To attend a debrief and discuss learning points for future events.

 

Person specification

Essential:

  • Significant experience of working with young children (pre- and primary school age)
  • In sympathy with Quaker values.
  • Skilled in developing and using activities which engage both children and adults.
  • Well organised and adaptable.
  • Willing and able to work alongside volunteer helpers.
  • PVG checked.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience of attending a Quaker meeting.
